Orlando Cruz: The First Openly Gay Professional Boxer

The professional boxer Orlando Cruz, from Puerto Rico, has been the first boxer who has describing himself as a gay man while still active professionally. The boxer called "el fenómeno" wanted everyone knows his sexual identity in such a dignified manner. This shows that LGBT people are part of all facets of our society.

Cruz represented Puerto Rico at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sidney as an amateur, and after that he debuted as a professional and did not lose until 2009. He is currently ranked 4th in his division featherweight by the World Boxing Organization.

The boxer has been endorsed by the Puerto Ricans Ricky Martin and Miguel Cotto.
