#NoHomophobes

The use of antigay hate speech on Twitter has increased, and thousands of its users continue to sling homophobic invective, sometimes without thinking.

NoHomophobes.com is a website which measures the number of instances several commonly-used anti-gay terms are used daily, weekly and yearly on Twitter. This website is designed as a social mirror to show the prevalence of casual homophobia in our society.

Words like “so gay”, “no homo”, “faggot” and “dyke” are used casually in everyday language, sometimes unconsciously, despite promoting the continued alienation, isolation and in some tragic cases suicide of harassed LGBT youth.

The use of the word “faggot” has highly increased since last year but the rest of terms monitored have remained steady around a similar use. There is only one exception when a NBA player recently said "no homo" at a press conference and it was trending on Twitter that day.

We no longer tolerate racist language, we’re getting better at dealing with sexist language, but sadly we’re still not actively addressing homophobic language in our society.

Let’s put an end to casual homophobia. Speak out when you see or hear homophobic language from friends, at school, in the locker room, at work or online. And use #NoHomophobes to show your support on Twitter.

Sometimes without thinking? Isn't twitter just a bunch of mindless babble anyway less than 125 characters long? I wouldn't worry about such rubbish.

In some situations it can be because of generation to generation. Sometimes it's called copy cat. Listening to conversation in the household schoolhouse workhouse.
Some people have never been around different sexualities in their lives. Remember the old generation was brought up in a very different different world. Ignorance can be very dangerous and sad.
More education understanding compassion is needed.
